Price Guide and Policy
Understanding why things are priced as they are helps you and Gülay feel comfortable when "doing business". When you see something you like you want to have it for the best possible price and, for her part, Gülay needs to have a reasonable return on her investment of time, materials and talent. Fairness between both parties is essential if each is to feel content at the end of any transaction.
In order to bring some perspective to pricing, here in Turkey, an unskilled worker is paid about TL60 per day and a craftsman between TL90-120 per day. All of Gülay's pieces are hand-crafted and take time to create; it is helpful to keep this in mind as you browse through her work or when discussing a commission whether a portrait on canvas or a favorite pet on a stone.
As you look at the detail on one of her stone paintings or a decorated tin can priced at TL7 or TL15 it may cross your mind that the stone or the can cost nothing, and this is true. However, when you reflect on how long Gülay has spent transforming the beautiful object you are holding you will realise that not only is it one-of-a-kind it is also wonderful value.
Paintings on canvas (and other mediums) can be difficult to price based on time spent as some have great detail. In order to try and overcome this Gülay has decided to offer her works within a price band ie TL 75-100, TL 150-200 and so on. If you see something you like then you can make an offer within the band. On occasion you may find something that really takes your fancy but is outside of your budget; in that case you could make her a reasonable offer which may, or may not be acceptable. It is all about striking a balance.
We all need to recognise that Gülay is not a "hobby" painter; she needs to contribute to the well-being of her family. She also needs the self-respect that comes from contributing by using the talent and skills that she has developed. Her hope is that you will find her work attractive enough to want it for its own intrinsic worth for yourself or as a gift. "A fair exchange . . ." she'll be happy, and so will you.
Stones, Cans,Tiles, Buckets etc are individually priced. They are inexpensive (starting from approx TL7 each) and represent outstanding value for money.
Paintings are grouped and price banded showing the top price and the lowest; the top price represents the true value of Gülay's time. If you love the subject and can afford it, this is the price you should offer. If, on the other hand, your budget is tight then offer what you can within the price band. Paintings are priced from approx TL 75-100 upwards.
Commissions are another matter; here you negotiate a price and, once agreed, this is what you stick to. Gülay will not ask for a deposit but you might consider offering one as a sign of good faith.
Gülay will be delighted to have you visit her workshop cum gallery at her home; you can browse for as long as you want and if you find something you like - great. If you don't, that's fine too.
